COMPETITION RULES

https://www.bjcp.org/download/2021_Guidelines_Beer.pdf

For Mead and Cider use the 2015 BJCP mead / cider styles for guidance.
These 2015 BJCP Guidelines can be found at:
http://bjcp.org/stylecenter.php
https://legacy.bjcp.org/docs/2015_Guidelines_Mead.pdf
https://legacy.bjcp.org/docs/2015_Guidelines_Cider.pdf

An entry is TWO 12 oz bottles/cans from a single batch of beer, cider, or mead (a 1st round, mini best of show, and a best of show).

All entries must be handcrafted products, containing ingredients available to the general public, and made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers (i.e., no use of commercial facilities or Brew on Premises operations, supplies, etc.).

In order to provide anonymity of brewer's entries during the judging, its important they do not contain distinguishing characteristics, therefore we REQUIRE that all entries meet the following guidelines:

(This means no bombers!)

Each bottle/can has no label (adhesive or painted) or other distinguishing marks.

Each 12 oz bottle is capped with an unmarked silver or gold cap.

Each 12 oz can must be either all silver or all black.

Bottles with raised glass lettering are not permitted.

Flip top or screw cap bottles are not permitted!

Corked bottles meeting the above standards are permitted provided they are capped over or have a cage retaining the cork.

Entry forms MUST be attached to bottles/cans with a rubber band only; glue and/or tape are unacceptable and will result in disqualification of the entry.

Non-compliant entries will be disqualified. Any non-compliant entries received may be judged (at the discretion of the competition organizers) but are not eligible for mini-best of show or awards.

Please fill out the entry forms completely. Be meticulous about noting any special ingredients that must be specified per the 2021 BJCP Style Guidelines. Failure to note such ingredients, carbonation levels, or sweetness may impact the judges scoring of your entry.

Specialty Categories requiring additional Information:
Category 21B, please specify type
Category 25B, please specify both the strength (table, standard, super) and the color (pale, dark.)

Category 28, please provide some type of info base beer description and the fermentation strain(s) used.

Please provide a base beer style for categories 29, 30A, 31, 32, 33, 34.

Mandatory requirements for meads and ciders are taken from: https://legacy.bjcp.org/docs/2015_Guidelines_Mead.pdf
https://legacy.bjcp.org/docs/2015_Guidelines_Cider.pdf

Entrants MUST specify carbonation level (still; petillant or lightly carbonated; sparkling or highly carbonated).

Entrants MUST specify strength level (hydromel or light mead; standard mead; sack or strong mead) and level of sweetness.

Please also note "Optional Requirements" which are not required but recommended, category-specific requirements, and defaults in the BJCP 2015 Mead Guidelines.

Brewers are not limited to one entry in each category but may only enter each subcategory once.

Bottles/cans will not be returned to contest entrants.

Completed entry forms must be submitted with all entries, and should be printed directly from this website. Recipe forms are NOT required.

Entries can be shipped or hand delivered during normal business hours to:

The Reno Homebrewer
535 E 4th St, Reno, NV 89512, 775-329-2537

**Hours of Operation"

10:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday

A single entry may consist of a Brewer and Co-brewers.

All brewers listed on an entry must have actively contributed to brewing, fermenting, and bottling/canning of an entry. Every participating brewer must be at least 21 years of age.

Brewers of an entry are not limited to one entry per category but may only enter one entry per subcategory.

For example, participants may enter a Belgian Tripel (26C) and Belgian Dark Strong Ale (26D), but may not enter two Belgian Dark Strong Ales, even if they are different brews. No member of an entry may submit another entry of the same subcategory, whether as an individual entrant, a member of the same entrant, or a member of another entrant.

Judges and stewards will be allowed to enter the competition, but no judge or steward will be assigned to a category for which they are entrants.

The competition organizers are not responsible for miss-categorized entries, mailed entries that are not received by the entry deadline, or entries that arrived damaged.

Qualified judging of all entries is the primary goal of our event. Judges will evaluate and score each entry according the 2021 BJCP guidelines (http://bjcp.org/stylecenter.php.) for beer and the 2015 BJCP guidelines for Meads and Ciders. The consensus score will rank each entry in its category. Each flight will have at least one BJCP judge, ranked "recognized" or higher.

Best of Show

Something BIG is Brewing in 2023

High Desert Brewgade reached out to five local breweries. They selected craft brewers and BJCP judges will judge the BOS table based on the best representation of entries on that table. There will be a Gold, Siver, and Bronze awards for the top three beers. However, The brewers will decide which beer of the BOS table they wish to brew at their establishments for resale in their taprooms.

Each of the following breweries are willing to brew one of the BOS Table entries. Now your chances to have a winning recipe brewed commercially and served on tap locally just increased by 5X! NOW THAT'S EXCITING

It will be up to the brewery if they wish to brew their selected beer for the Pro-am at GABF in 2024.

We have commitments from the following five breweries based on their unique differences in brewing styles.
Revision Brewing,380 S Rock Blvd, Sparks, NV 89431
Schussboom Brewing,12245 S Virginia St, Reno, NV 89511
IMBIB Custom Brews,785 E 2nd St, Reno, NV 89502
Great Basin Brewing,846 Victorian Ave, Sparks, NV 89431
Pigeon Head Brewing,840 E 5th St, Reno, NV 89512

Pro-Am Selection:

The five breweries represented at the BOS judging will also select from the pool of BOS entries a beer they will to brew commercially. These selections may or may not be one of the top 3 winning BOS entries. It is also up to the brewery if they wish to send this beer to GABF 2024.
